Finding affordable things to do with the family over the long summer holidays can seem like a draining task, but it needn’t be difficult. Even if you don’t go on holiday, keeping your kids entertained over the summer can become unnecessarily expensive. To help out, here is a list of affordable or cheap days out to make this summer holiday loads of fun for the whole family.

On Rainy Days

Just because it’s summer, it doesn’t mean there won’t be rainy days. If you find yourself stuck of things to do on a rainy day, you could head over to your nearest free museum. You’ll find loads of exhibitions covering local history, natural history, science and famous figures. You could also trace your family tree with the kids using library resources as well as online research at home.

World’s Largest Ice Cream Shop

If you and your family have a sweet tooth, then you are really in for a treat. The Ice Cream Farm in Tattenhall near Chester holds the guinness world record for being the world’s largest ice cream shop since 2015, offering over 50 different flavours. As well as this, there are many attractions and games on-site, and a cafe where parents can relax with a coffee and an ice cream while the kids play.

Steam Train Ride

Whether it be rain or sunshine, jumping aboard a high-class steam train is a fantastic trip out with the family as you are transported back to the early 20th century – a time when train travel was at the height of popularity. There is an amazing range of classic steam train experiences to get your train adventure on track. If you have younger ones, the excitement may tire them out so be sure to bring a travel pillow so they can take naps along the way.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour

If you’ve ran out of films to watch, why not go and experience exclusive behind the scenes of the classics. This tour offers an exclusive look at authentic costumes, props and sets for the iconic Harry Potter film series. Follow in the footsteps of Harry, Ron and Hermione and step into the Great Hall at Hogwarts. On your way out, don’t forget to grab a delicious mug of Butterbeer. If travelling to Hertfordshire proves to be a bit of a drive, then don’t forget to bring a travelling pillow.
